URAHARA
In Urahara, our three heroines are trapped in their beloved Harajuku as culture-leeching space aliens called Scoopers try to take over the Earth. Using the powers of their creativity and imagination, the trio fight off these aliens. The idea of magical girls fighting aliens isn't new, of course, but here it's taken to a wonderful aesthetic extreme--the aliens aren't just humanoid, but are goofy-looking, avant-garde, cartoony monsters. The three girls run a fashion shop and each of them is passionate about Harajuku culture and fashion. It's an extremely pleasant, fun anime and I can't reccommend it enough :3
Our main girl Rito is the reserved, serious-seeming girl who specialises in visual art. I adore how all the girls are drawn in this anime--they look more like real teenagers than in a lot of other shows, and the slight softness to the limbs is lovely. Rito has a sausage as her symbol, which is funny and adorable, and she hilariously has a few tucked into her pockets here like grenades, or strapped to her thigh like a knife. There's a subtle military element to her outfit, which I think is easy to mess up or make uncomfortable, but here it's great. She looks like she could be on a construction set. The medical-looking hardhat, the small jacket, the visor and the gloves work together really well. Her colours clash in a harmonious, appealing way, while the brown hair soothes it all. Plus, any magical girl in shorts/pants is awesome and we need more. I love how the costumes in Urahara are mostly normal clothes with absurd elements slapped on...and then the boots are more classic magical girly, for a sweet finishing touch. Her weapons are SO GOOD--check out that little paint ufo!! Rito almost looks like Parappa if he became a magical girl and that's a huge compliment.
Kotoko is the cheerful, science-loving space cadet, and her design totally reflects this in and out of costume. She looks just like a high school movie esque nerd character, while the cat ear accessories let you know she's a little more eccentric than normal. Her hair is very cute (not just saying this because I have a blonde bob too!). When transformed, Kotoko's blue kitty jumpsuit is adorable, as are her tiny cat plushies. Again, we've got a very unique magical girl design with more classic, Precure-esque boots; it works amazingly. She looks almost like a little alien girl. So so cute!
Mari is the princessy fashionista of the group. A sort of "tsundere"/"himedere" type but without ever being cruel to her friends--that's one of my favourite tropes when done as well as it's done here. Mari's usual civilian design is already oozing magical girl vibes with those big reddish-brown twintails done up in scallopy ties, the frilled skirt, and the ribbons all over the blouse. She even has very Madoka Kaname looking Mary Janes! Therefore, it comes as an interesting surprise that her magical form adopts a slightly different aesthetic. Transformed, Mari wears a lot more black with her zippered crop top and garter belted boots. Only her overall miniskirt retains her civilian pink. I adore this flipping of aesthetics for a transformation, and she looks great in both! There are still traces of her princessy look when transformed, with the puffy sleeves, the cute wings on her shoes, and of course those rad pigtails. The utility pockets on the skirt are such a cool touch. All of Urahara's magical girl trio seem to have an element of practicality to their outfits, and it really supports that handmade, DIY fashion aesthetic. I really doubt I could choose a favourite between these girls, but Mari is pink...so...
Misa acts almost like the fairy of this show, though her little sentient shrimp friend is the one doing most of the explaining. I really love how he folds up as her scarf btw, with her matching shrimpy boots. Misa really is adorable, though her face doesn't quite match her body for me, considering how young she's meant to be. Maybe that uncanny valley feeling is intentional? The pastel colours and pink hair with the big stars is supersweet. Great skirt.
Sayumin, while a fairly minor character (a vendor at a crepe store), really leaves an impression with that design. She totally does look like someone selling a trendy aesthetic food and wearing a stand-out costume to appeal to that. The ice-creamy looking pinstripes and the maid elements of the outfit are lovely, and the colours are very pleasing, though the bright blue eyes come across as slightly overkill maybe. Where's Sayumin's magical girl form TwT...
