Pretty Cure Splash Star

Saki Hyuuga/Cure Bloom/Cure Bright

Both of these girls are almost identical to Nagisa and Honoka, which, while probably just an example of early Precure playing it safe, is more than a little confusing. Personality-wise, they're also inspired by the first gen girls, with Saki a cheerful, energetic softball player. I'm sorry to say I think the Splash Star duo, generally, have significantly worse designs. Saki gets the short end of the stick here. The school uniform is nice and her hair has a bit of personality to it in civilian form, but as a cure she's kind of a thematic trainwreck. I like the nature theme of this season and the girls' powers, and I wish it was utilised more in the actual designs. I'm not against the fighting game character look Bloom has going on (the shapes are appealing, especially the petal skirt) but the hair is awkward and the colour palette is an eyesore. Of course, her "power up" Cure Bright is a lot worse, with those clashing bright colours and no real visible theming other than her Pac Man looking moon charm. I just don't think these designs would be fun to look at for 50 episodes.

Mai Mishou/Cure Egret/Cure Windy

Mai is definitely better. Though a lot of her personality is still siphoned from Honoka, she also has an interest in art and illustration which I think makes her stand out. Her civilian design is okay and I like her Precure forms quite a bit, though Windy is my winner. Egret has a great name and the cute birdy sleeves, but otherwise I have nothing to say; Windy has a certain ethereality and flow I think works better. I do wonder if a different hairstyle might have worked; the spiky ponytail clashes in a way I doubt was intentional.
